Sabine French
Sabine French is an artist, sculptor, welder, and live painter based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is also the author of Southern Charm, a novella set in her home state of North Carolina.
French’s first creative love was words. She received a Master’s Degree from Duke University with a focus in creative writing and her short stories have won accolades from writing magazines and various competitions. Her novella has been a top 200 genre seller on Kindle.
French’s writing career was interrupted by a mild brain injury and she turned to something new – painting – in an effort to cross-train the creative parts of her brain.
Now recovered and painting full-time, French’s visual work is literally “hands on,” as she pours acrylic paint onto her gloved hands, spreading it on the canvas in an attempt to physically channel unadulterated abstract expression. Some paintings incorporate “found wire” as part of her interest in how outside forces spontaneously shape objects. Says French: “Looking for beauty in imperfection is both an artistic and life practice for me.”
Her paintings have been selected for juried art festivals in Nashville, Tennessee. Her metal sculptures have been commissioned and shown in Raleigh, North Carolina. And she’s enjoying branching into a new realm, having recently been featured as a live painter at a tech conference in Washington, DC.
Beginning in 2018, French will be exploring other areas of her craft at NSCAD (formerly the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design) in Halifax, Canada.
French began her career in television and film, and is an active animal welfare activist in her spare time.
